Homicide, assault, break-in

Crime scene cleanup in Port St. Lucie

When police have finished with a home after a violent crime, someone still has to deal with what is left. That does not have to be you. Call to talk with an independent cleanup company that works in Port St. Lucie.

Wait for the release

The home is part of an investigation until the police say it is not. In Port St. Lucie that is usually the Port St. Lucie Police Department; outside the city it is the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office or, in Martin County, the Martin County Sheriff or Stuart Police.

Ask the officer two things before they leave: the case or report number, and who will tell you when you can go back in. If nobody calls, the Port St. Lucie Police non-emergency number is 772-871-5000 (City of Port St. Lucie).

Do not start cleaning before the release, even a little. It can disturb evidence, and it exposes you to whatever is in the blood.

Florida's victim compensation program

What it can pay for

The state rule lists crime scene cleanup among the losses the program can repay: removing and disposing of biohazardous material after a violent crime in the victim's own home or vehicle (Rule 2A-2.2001).

Who must do the work

The same rule says the cleanup has to be done by a government-authorized provider. Ask the company how it meets that before work starts, and keep its paperwork.

Reporting and deadlines

The crime has to be reported to police within five days unless there was good cause, and for crimes since October 2019 a claim is filed within three years (s. 960.13, s. 960.07).

Help with the forms

The Port St. Lucie Police Victim Assistance Unit helps victims file compensation claims: (772) 873-6354, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (PSLPD). The state program's number is 1-800-226-6667 (Attorney General).

What the company will do

  • Seal the affected rooms and run air filtration while it works
  • Remove soaked carpet, pad, drywall or furniture that cannot be cleaned
  • Clean and disinfect hard surfaces, then check that nothing is left behind trim or under flooring
  • Bag and box the waste and carry it out for disposal

Some damage from a crime, such as a broken door or a damaged wall, is repair work rather than cleanup. Ask the company which parts it covers and which need a separate contractor.

Ready when you are

Call when the police and the medical examiner have finished and you are ready to talk about the cleanup. A company will ask what happened and where, then explain what it would do.
