Before you sign
Checking a cleanup company before you hire it
The company you reach through this number is independent, so check it as you would any contractor. These checks take a few minutes.
The state's list
The Florida Department of Health keeps a list of trauma scene cleanup companies by county (Florida DOH list). The department does not regulate how they clean. It permits them as biomedical waste generators and registers them to transport the waste.
Look the company up by name. A listing without a four-digit number means the company is not registered to transport biomedical waste. The department says the list is a convenience, not an endorsement, and companies are added at their own request, so a missing name is a question to ask, not proof of a problem.
What to ask
How does the waste leave?
Ask who transports it and where it goes. It should leave in sealed, labeled containers.
What insurance do you carry?
Ask for proof of liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage.
What is in the price?
Ask what drives it: rooms, materials removed, odor treatment, disposal. Get it in writing.
What will you remove?
Ask them to list what they expect to throw away and to check with you before removing anything else.
How will you show it is done?
Ask for photos and a short written summary when the work is finished.
For victim compensation
The state rule calls for a government-authorized provider. Ask how the company meets that.
Signs to slow down
- Pressure to sign before you have read the paperwork
- A price given without asking what happened or where
- Unwillingness to put the scope in writing
- Offers to handle matters that are yours or your insurer's to decide
You can always end a call, think it over and call back.
Ready when you are
Call when the police and the medical examiner have finished and you are ready to talk about the cleanup. A company will ask what happened and where, then explain what it would do.
